Ask a mother what’s worse: children playing in the mud, or those bright white sneakers ending up covered in brown stains afterward… 😉 As the proud owner of two sneaker-obsessed teenagers (and secretly a sneaker enthusiast myself), I know all too well how frustrating cleaning white sneakers can be. White soles turning dull and yellow – yikes. Luckily, I didn’t need to buy an expensive “sneaker cleaning kit” or use risky bleach products. My salvation came from a tub and… a smiley sponge! The Pink Stuff and Scrub Daddy turned out to be the perfect duo for getting yellowed soles white again. Time for a sneaker rescue mission in my own living room.
Those sneakers can still be saved
I still remember how indignant I felt when I saw my daughter’s snow-white sneakers after her first festival: the soles had turned yellow, with mud splattered everywhere. “I’ll never get these clean again…,” she sighed. But this mum saw a challenge. I had seen countless hacks on TikTok – from toothpaste to baking soda – but one method stood out: cleaning with The Pink Stuff. So I pulled the dirty laces out of the sneakers, grabbed my tub of Pink Stuff and that trusty Scrub Daddy sponge, and got to work.

Here’s a quick explanation of why I chose this combo. The Pink Stuff cleaning paste is gentle but powerful: it contains a mild abrasive that loosens dirt and discolouration without damaging the rubber of your soles. (Did you know that harsh cleaning agents like chlorine or pure bleach can make your soles porous and yellow? No, thank you!) Pink Stuff, on the other hand, is 99% natural and free from harsh chemicals, making it a much gentler option for your expensive sneakers. And that Scrub Daddy sponge? It’s perfect for scrubbing because it doesn’t leave scratches and reaches every nook and cranny – plus, it changes firmness depending on the temperature. For the sturdy outer edge of the sole, I used it cold (for some satisfying firm scrubbing), while for the upper of the shoe I used it warm and soft, so I could dab carefully without damaging anything.
Step by step: soles as white as new
Here’s how I carried out the sneaker transformation:
- Prepare: First, I knocked the worst of the sand and dirt off the shoes. I removed the laces and placed them separately in a bowl of soapy water with a little The Pink Stuff Oxi (yes, there’s a laundry version too!). That way, they could soak while I worked on the rest. Put an old towel on the table or work outside, as there may be some splashing.
- Apply Pink Stuff: Using my trusty Scrub Daddy (slightly dampened), I picked up some The Pink Stuff paste and spread it over the entire sole and side of the shoe. I paid extra attention to the edge where the sole meets the fabric – that’s where dirt builds up. The paste is nice and thick, so it stayed firmly on the rubber sole, even on vertical sections.
- Let it work and scrub: I let the pink paste sit for a few minutes on the really yellowed areas. Then the scrubbing fun began: I rubbed the Scrub Daddy over the sole in circular motions. What an immediate difference! The sponge, dipped in cold water, was firm enough to remove black marks and mud without needing to press very hard. And because the Scrub Daddy doesn’t scratch, I could even scrub over the logo on the heel without damaging it. For the upper edge of the sole (where it meets the white fabric), I held the sponge in warm water for a moment so it softened, then scrubbed gently – that let me tackle stains on the canvas without scuffing it.
- Wipe and repeat: With an old damp cloth, I wiped away all the Pink Stuff residue and dissolved dirt. Rinse the cloth well in between, because a lot of brown gunk comes off! I gave some stubborn yellow spots a second treatment: a little more Pink Stuff, a quick scrub, and they were gone. Don’t forget to wipe the edges of the sole around the toe and heel carefully, as paste can remain there. My tip: use a cotton swab or an old toothbrush for small gaps and logo details.
- Dry and finish: Happy with the result, I left the sneakers to air-dry. By then, I had taken the laces out of their soak and rinsed them; they came out of the ordeal looking much fresher too. Once everything was dry, I gave the shoes a quick spray with a fresh fabric spray (the delicious Zesty Fruit scent from Fabulosa!) so they not only looked clean, but smelled fresh too. Laces back in, and job done.
The result: from worn-out to fabulous
And then, of course, came the moment of truth: the before and after of the sneakers. If I hadn’t taken photos, no one would have believed they were the same shoes! The soles are shining white again, and even the grooves on the underside are mostly clean again (for perfectionists: a wooden skewer helps pick out small pieces of gravel, haha). The yellow haze has disappeared, and the fabric of the sneakers looks much brighter after my touch-up too.
My daughter couldn’t believe her eyes: “Mum, they look new again!” she happily shouted. Naturally, she immediately took photos for Instagram – including a dramatic swipe to show the before and after. I can’t blame her; the difference is so satisfying to see that I gave myself a pat on the back too. This is exactly why sneaker-cleaning videos go viral: who doesn’t love a good transformation?
Saved money and refreshed: absolutely worth it
One important point: this cleaning session saved me money. There’s no need to buy new sneakers or pay for expensive cleaning services when you have a tub of Pink Stuff in the cupboard. For less than ten pounds, you get a product that lasts for dozens of uses and can handle all kinds of cleaning jobs. And a Scrub Daddy sponge doesn’t cost the earth either, but it lasts a long time – much longer than a standard scouring sponge. What’s more, I’m not left with an unpleasant chlorine smell or stiff, dried-out soles (which can happen when you use pure bleach – seriously, don’t!).
This sneaker cleaning hack is one I can recommend to everyone.
